Color Wheel and Color Charts | Class 3 of Introduction to Watercolors Series

Color Wheel and Color Charts | Class 3 of Introduction to Watercolors Series

Saturday 27 June
Wickham Road, Canterbury Estates, Kernersville, NC - 10am - 2 Hours
Lisa Geiger
One of the things I see a LOT in classes is the challenge of finding the right color and being unhappy with the result. Knowing the colors that are in your pans or tubes, understanding how to mix what you have to achieve a desired hue and value is essential to success. We will learn the essentials of colors, the color wheel, values, color harmony, and mixing. We'll paint a color wheel with graduated values with your own colors so that you have a reference for your own paints. We will learn to paint some color charts to understand how you can find your own colors.
Bring with you: watercolors, specifically a yellow, red, and blue for the color wheel, two water containers, pencil and eraser, several sheets watercolor paper your choice, size should be at least 8 square to accommodate the circle. The brushes I will be using are No. 6, 8 rounds.
You will walk down a grassy hill in the back yard to get to the cabin, and then back up when you go, so wear appropriate shoes.

Saturday 15 August
Wickham Road, Canterbury Estates, Kernersville, NC - 10am - 2 Hours
Lisa Geiger
A perfect FIRST CLASS, this beginner-oriented opportunity explores some of the enormous assortment of supplies that are marketed to watercolorists. Paper. Paints. Brushes. How many colors ARE there? How much do I need to spend? How fancy or professional does it need to be? The beginning of our time together will involve explanation of different materials that are available and how to understand what is distinct about them. After this introduction, you will have the opportunity to use samples of a variety of materials from economy to what can be used professionally. I'll provide examples of moths and butterflies as subjects for you to work from. From this experience, you should walk away with not only an understanding of the materials, but a personal opinion on how they perform for you. You should not need any materials for the class, but are welcome to bring them.

Lisa Geiger
Lisa lives in the central northern area of North Carolina between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. Surrounded by farms and gentle hills, the changing colors and moods of the land and sky, birds, geese, bunnies, and other critters that make their homes there, and the endless treasures found on walks, her view of the world inspires her art. Her work gives voice to the joy and beauty she finds in nature.

Watercolor is her natural and most expressive medium, which she combines with inks, acrylics, paper, sticks, and other bits. Her eye is informed by her training in both architectural and graphic design and is drawn to repetition, form, line and color.

Favorite things include her family, water, birds, sky, changing light, joy in the moment, getting dirty in the garden, collecting bits of nature, finding beauty in tiny things and her cats, Mila, Talulah, and Wyatt.

Title or Location: I Am Not French
That is the title of this piece, and it still makes me laugh. People mix up Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs all the time?Frenchies get the spotlight, and Bostons get mistaken for them. I have definitely been guilty of it too. But trust me, their owners will set you straight in a heartbeat if you get it wrong. This little study was painted in gouache, my very first time using the medium. Like watercolor, it is water soluble, but the big difference is in the finish. Watercolor is translucent

By intentionally painting only the areas around and between the child, I allow the negative space to shape and define the background. The white space is not an absence, but a deliberate and active presence?a foundational element of the composition. It creates balance, offering the eyes a place to rest and to breathe. Subtle patches of cerulean introduce visual interest and gentle movement. Through this interplay of space and color, I hope the piece evokes a sense of solitude, tranquility, and qu

Title or Location: The Fishing Place
This painting was created for a healthcare-related acquaintance, someone I've known for a long time and is an avid fisherman. As I explore abstract, loose watercolor, I love to create settings that are mystical and inviting. When I presented this to them as a gift, I said, "Here is your new fishing place!" The response of "This looks like somewhere I'd like to go!" showed me that I am on the right path.
